A Nouveau Metals Arts piece from the early 1900s from the Jennings Brothers Manufacturing Company, founded in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1890 and active into the 1950s. The box sits on four bun feet. Makers mark JB on the underside. The lid shows a rendition of a 16th century allegory by the Flemish engraver Aegidius Sadeler II (1568-1629): "Minerva Leads Painting to Her Place Among the Seven Liberal Arts." Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and ingenuity, leads Pictura, the personification of Painting, to claim a place among the seven Platonic Liberal Arts: Rhetoric (shown holding a book), Music (playing a flute), Logic (shown with snakes), Arithmetic (holding a tablet), Geometry (holding a compass in her left hand), Grammar (in the rear), and Astronomy (raising a globe). The box is lined with removable, mitered panels of dark reddish brown plastic, similar to Bakelite or celluloid. A scrap of old newspaper clipping is Scotch taped to the underside of the lid.
