The beholder come across a nude gladiator in intensive training in the courtyard of a school. Under the command of his teacher, who usually was a retired gladiator, the novice, learns how to defend and attack for his life. Successful training required intense commitment even included preparation for a stoical, unflinching death. The handmade bronze sculpture was molded using the archaic methods of lost-wax casting and stained with a brown patina finish.
