Art Deco Compote
We offer a large unmarked Art Deco centerpiece compote from the studio of Oscar B. Bach. The patinated bronze bowl is attached to a matching bronze pedestal base featuring four nude male telamons with forward bent heads supporting the upper bowl. Crenellated trim crowns the figural nudes and surrounds the round base with flattened ball feet.
The compote weighs 23 pounds 6.6 ounces and measures 17" in diameter at the top rim of the bowl and 10" in diameter at the base. The male figures are 7 1/2" in height and the overall height of the compote is 14".
Oscar B. Bach (1884-1957) was a German born American designer and craftsman working from his New York City studio beginning in 1911. He won the Grand Prix at the World Exhibition in Turin and regularly exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Industrial Art. His work appears in the Empire State Building, the Rockefeller Centre and the Chrysler Building. The telamon figures seen on the compote relate to the monumental bronze lanterns that Bach designed for the New York Department of Health Building in 1932.
