Description
VINTAGE 1920’S WINGED EGYPTIAN BRONZE OVER PLASTER BOOKENDS SIGNED.Offered here is a beautiful pair of vintage bookends in the form of Egyptian winged females.
Both are made of bronze-clad plaster and are beautifully detailed.
Bookends like these are often electroplated in a process called bronze-cladding. This was a meticulous and lengthy process.
The plaster cast was coated in a layer of hot wax to seal the surface, and then sprayed with a coat of electrically conductive material like graphite.
The mold was then attached to a cathode and suspended in the plating solution tank; it could take up to three days for the plating to be completely finished.
A tell-tale identifier of bronze-clad pieces is often an indentation on the underside of the casting.
One of the bookends exhibits a tiny piece of cathode wire still attached on the underside (though it is barely visible).
Each of these figures has a dark gold color.
On the underside of one bookends there are remains of felt.
There are some other spots of age and wear, though the bookends remain in good vintage condition.
